Many of you have probably seen the planes land on Princess Juliana Airport, in St Martin island, arriving from the sea and passing almost tangentially to Maho Beach. Some aircrafts (especially the big ones) fly so close that you feel you can touch them. That’s because the runway is immediately opposite Maho. There are also tourist signs on the fence delineating the airport, warning them that it is dangerous to stay exactly below the planes that land because the current caused by them can literally pick them up.

Otherwise, Maho is not necessarily a dream beach. Of course, turquoise water and white sand always make the delight of sun lovers. But Maho is pretty crowded, and because of the planes that go by so often, she’s also noisy. If you’re tired of staring at the horizon, watching the huge birds fly across the blue sky, you can go to the Sunset Bar, where you can enjoy a cold beer and where to… keep scrubbing the stairs.
