Are you going to Greece to relax on the islands or to spend time in its capital? The turmoil, rhythm, and spirit of the local people in Athens and throughout the region may become overwhelming at some point. Athens is a popular tourist destination because of its history and its boundless dynamism, thus becoming one of the most spectacular cities to visit in the Mediterranean region. You’re going to the islands? OK, but don’t bypass the Capital. And if you feel you need a break in the agitation of the city, here are some suggestions for one-day trips from Athens that you can take during your stay in Greece’s capital city.

Also, if you travel to Athens, here is how to get from Athens Airport to the city center.

Aegina Island is locals’ favorite escape, and probably it will be the same for you. The streets on the island are surrounded by small restaurants and shops, while one of the most beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean is just a stone’s throw from this area. Nearby there is also a water park, excellent for children.

Easy to reach from Athens, this beautiful island is worth visiting and worth exploring everything it offers. The ferry trip from Piraeus to Hydra Island takes two hours, so you better devote an entire day to this trip. You will immediately notice the numerous taxis pulled by donkeys, waiting for the tourists who descend from the ferry from the moment you arrive here.

Marathon

Marathon is where Greece won the war against the Persian Empire, so it also has a historic significance, besides the mythical one, connected to Pheidippides’ famous race, sent to Athens to announce the victory. Although locals do not see this destination as one of the most popular, it is a good choice, being close to Athens, very quiet and peaceful. For a relaxing afternoon, visit the dam and the lake that keeps the water supply for the city of Athens. In addition, there are small restaurants, right down the road, in the village Oropos.

Vouliagmeni Lake
