Romania is one of the most beautiful countries in south-eastern Europe. Even if its tourism promotion policies are not always the most appropriate or are entirely lacking, the arguments for a visit to Romania are numerous and equally solid. Romania is a country with fantastic landscapes, mountains, sea, plains, hills, rich history, delicious gastronomy, friendly people and… reasonable prices. In other words, Romania is a country for all budgets, so it’s worth visiting whether you have a generous budget or a limited travel budget.

Book a flight to Bucharest at the best prices!

A trip to Romania doesn’t cost a fortune, especially if you find out about prices in Romania beforehand and look for places where prices aren’t high. The pandemic has raised prices a bit – generally speaking – but that doesn’t mean Romania has become an expensive country in the wake of Covid.

To help you get an idea of prices in Romania, we’ve put together recent information on accommodation, food, and transport prices for 2022. Check out this guide and get your bags ready because Romania awaits you with open arms and many pleasant surprises!

Going to Romania? Here you have the best prices for hotels in Bucharest!

The prices below are for two adults sharing a room in the center of Bucharest. If you plan to stay further away from the center, prices drop considerably. And if you accommodate outside the city, you may find accommodation prices 30-50% lower.

Hotel prices in downtown Bucharest, Romania:

  • 2 stars – 25-30 euro (130-150 RON)
  • 3 stars – 30-60 euro (150-300 RON)
  • 4 stars – 30-380 euro (150-1900 RON)
  • 5 stars – 70-150 euro (330 – 1300 RON)

Prices have been checked on Booking.com for hotels located exclusively in downtown Bucharest. One night’s accommodation in February 2022.

As you can see, prices vary widely. There are many newly built hotels, and also many top hotels are not right in the center of the capital. However, a good room at a decent hotel in downtown Bucharest can be obtained for around 50-70 euros.

Choosing your travel dates carefully can get you cheap accommodation. Booking at the last minute, on the other hand, is likely to bring you higher prices for a hotel in downtown Bucharest.

Things are no different when it comes to hotel prices in other major Romanian cities.

Cluj Napoca is the second most expensive city in the country, after Bucharest. Here, the price of a room in a 5-star hotel is between 130-190 euros (650-950 RON), while for a 3-star hotel or apartment, you can pay between 25-80 euros (125-400 RON).

In Iași, the largest city in eastern Romania, the price of a room in a 5-star hotel is 90-100 euros (450-500 RON), while for a 3-star hotel you pay 25-70 euros (125-350 RON) per room.

An alternative to hotel accommodation is staying in a hostel. There are many good hostels in Bucharest, where you can also find private rooms with private bathrooms and where prices are not very high. In downtown Bucharest, prices for an adult in a hostel room start at 20 euros (100 RON) and can go up to 50 euros (250 RON).

In Cluj-Napoca or Iasi, as in other major Romanian cities, prices for hostel accommodation start at the same €20, although you can sometimes find a place for as little as €15.

The more expensive hostels are nicer and usually include a bar, restaurant or terrace, café or places to hang out, socialize with other travelers, listen to live music, or watch shows.

Among the best hostels in downtown Bucharest are Hostel Jaz, Mil Pasos, Popcorn.

How much does it cost to stay in a guest house in Romania?

In recent years, many guesthouses have sprung up in Romania, most offering the facilities you’d find in a hotel. The rating system for the guesthouse is based on daisies (instead of stars), from one to five.

Prices of guesthouses vary widely, depending on the region, the number of daisies, the facilities offered, and the season. In the height of the winter or summer season, the price of a room in a three-daisy guesthouse is likely to be very high, as demand is usually high.

How much does a place in a campsite cost in Romania?

The combination of transport and accommodation gives you more flexibility in your holiday. Plus, if you have a camper van, you can spend several days touring up and down Romania, stopping at campsites in different areas. There are more and more camping areas in Romania, and prices start from 8 euro/night (40 RON) to 45-50 euro/night (225-250 RON).

One site where you can check the prices of various campsites in Romania is this one.

Suppose you want to rent a camper van in Romania. In that case, the price varies depending on the type, capacity, and facilities, from 15 euros per day (75 RON) to fully-equipped luxury caravans that rent for 120-140 euros/day in high season (600-700 RON).

How much does food cost in Romania?

Romania is not one of the cheapest countries in Europe when it comes to food, but neither is it one of the most expensive. If you plan to spend several days on holiday in Romania, and don’t want to eat out three times a day, you can keep your budget under control by buying food in the supermarkets that dot the cities and preparing your own food, especially if your accommodation has a kitchenette.

There are many supermarkets and hypermarkets in Bucharest, and you could even say that Romania’s capital is a city of shopping centers in the town. Besides the classic international brands, Auchan, Carrefour, Cora, Lidl, Kaufland, Penny’s, almost every street in Bucharest has a Mega Image store where you can buy practically anything. There’s even a joke that soon, every block of flats will have a Mega Image store.

There are markets in the neighborhoods to buy fresh fruits and vegetables and other products. In the city center, there is only one market (Amzei Market), and prices here are higher than elsewhere.

Bucharest is not a city known as a lively street food city. However, there are a few areas where there are a few caravans where street food is prepared, but the prices are pretty high. Otherwise, the most popular street food is the shaorma, with specialized restaurants everywhere, the price of a shaorma starting at 2 euros.

Prices in restaurants in Bucharest

At restaurants in Bucharest, you pay according to location, reputation, and, obviously, menu. There are restaurants to suit all budgets, and in the Old Town, you can find everything from traditional Romanian restaurants to Japanese and Chinese restaurants.

One of the most frequented restaurants by foreign tourists in the Old Centre of Bucharest is Caru cu Bere, an old place where you can listen to live music every day. Prices here vary, but, for example, a three-course lunch menu (soup, main course, side dishes, salad, and dessert) is around €6.5 (RON 38) (prices in January 2022).

Otherwise at the same restaurant:

  • a veal soup is 4 euros (19 RON),
  • a Caesar salad 6 euros (33 RON),
  • a Wagyu burger 12 euros (62 RON),
  • a portion of Viennese sausage with cheese 7 euros (35 RON),
  • a pork chop with sour cabbage 10 euros (51 RON),
  • a portion of fried potatoes 2 euros (12 RON),
  • a grilled beef tenderloin 18 euros (90 RON).
  • a portion of papanași (traditional Romanian dessert) 5 euro (25 RON)
  • a glass of țuica (traditional Romanian plum spirit) 2,2 euro (13.5 RON)
  • a cocktail 5-8 euro (25 – 40 RON)
  • local draft beer (400 ml) 2,2 euro (12.50 RON)

  • a glass of wine (150 ml) 4.1 – 5 euro (22 – 28 RON)
  • a bottle of Romanian wine from 20 euro (100 RON)

Of course, prices can be higher for gourmet food or lower for other restaurants. For example, at the Ciorbăria restaurant (soups only), you can eat a belly soup or a beef goulash for 3.6 euro (18 RON).
